NTSU Advice is a confidential service. We won't share any information about you, or even confirm that you've contacted us, with anyone outside the NTSU Advice team or the NTSU Executive team (including parents/guardians, NTU, or other organisations) without your express consent.
We record all case details on AdvicePro, a password-protected casework database. Only NTSU Advice Service staff can access this database, and records are destroyed after seven years.
If we need to contact NTU staff or another organisation on your behalf, we'll ask for your consent first. For organisations outside NTU, such as letting agents, private halls providers, Student Finance or your local authority, we'll require your written permission.
There are a small number of situations where we may have to share information without your consent. These are:
We'll explain our confidentiality policy, and when it may be broken, before you discuss your query with us.
You have the right to see the information we hold about you. To make a request, email advice@su.ntu.ac.uk and we'll respond within three working days.
Any statistics we share about our service are anonymised, so individuals can never be identified. Confidentiality also continues after a client's death.
For our full confidentiality policy, please email advice@su.ntu.ac.uk
The NTSU Advice Service is a confidential service for Nottingham Trent Students' Union members; therefore, we can only speak to our students themselves. If you are a parent or guardian, we would need written permission from the student to discuss their case with you.
We understand that students' parents are emotionally and often financially involved in their lives. However, we cannot discuss any student details with parents, guardians, or family members or even confirm if they have been in contact with us.
One of our service principles is to empower students. Students are legally responsible for their decisions and the consequences of how they live. We are here to help them through issues they may face as adults. Our many years of experience have shown it is in the adviser's and student's best interests to have that direct contact.
If you divulge any information to us about a student who is engaging with our service, we will make them aware of the information you have given us.
We can provide general information to parents/guardians — for example, where students can go for welfare support or academic help. You can also visit our website for information on many issues affecting students.
If you would like any specific advice on any issues e.g. what liabilities you have as guarantor, student finance queries etc., there are many other organisations that can help you, such as Citizens Advice, Shelter or Student Finance.
If you have concerns about their wellbeing, you may wish to contact someone at the University. Although bear in mind that under normal circumstances, no information about students can be divulged to parents/guardians without the student's permission. Please read the University's parent and carer FAQs for more information.
For more details about sources of wellbeing information and support, including third-party services, please see the University's get help and support page.
Student Minds also have helpful information about providing support at University.
Thank you for your understanding.
