As the land is not owned by either the Students Union or the University, there is limited control we can exercise over it, with cleanliness often prioritised over prevention in this area. We in the Student Union, however, support and encourage initiatives to help students stop smoking. For more information on this, please contact your VP Community & Welfare or NTSU's Information and Advice Service.
As a non smoker I find it is frustrating to walk through groups of smokers who congregate around public areas which are not designated as smoking spaces. These include outside the main Boots Library entrance in the city and in front of John Clare lecture theatres on Clifton campus. This is especially irritating as the areas are clearly marked non smoking. It appears the policy isn't considered serious by those students involved and I feel intimidated by them as well as reluctant to call in a staff member directly to confront.
Either a re-education of students or a periodic checking of these spaces would be most welcome.
Hi Lance, thanks for your big idea! With regards to this, it is very difficult for us at the Students' Union to police as the property is not ours. Often cleanliness is prioritised over prevention in these areas! I would recommend talking to the university about this, as they will be able to help you better. At the Students' Union we do not encourage smoking and encourage a lifestyle for our students that is positive for their wellbeing.
