My proposal is for the creation of a position (Possibly a volunteer one) of an International Student Mentor.

The aim would be to:

a) act as a a student mentor to international students(especially postgraduates) who are schooling at NTU and the United Kingdom for the first time in a very short and busy year.

b) to give guidance on navigating the myriad of resources available at NTU which is often dfferent from what they are used to

c) offer a confidant's ear to their troubles preferably by someone who was an an international post graduate student as well and can entirely relate to their struggles

d) help them see the support NTU offers and take advantage of them in order to have the best time they could possibly have

e) give them tips on what to explore and how to organize their activities

The reasons for this proposal :

a) the current dissatisaction among international students on deactivation of accounts and withdrawal of studentships

b) preserving the university's goodwill among students of the international community and allow continuos patronage by international students

c) the fact that it is one thing for NTU to offer support, but another thing for students to understand and know how to utilize that support

d) that students often find it easier to first speak to their peers before approaching tutors and or authorities, an international student mentor is a excellent person for such a role

e) because I myself have made mistakes in the course of my academic masters programme which I probably wouldn't have made if I had a mentor or advisor who I was very confident to speak to

I also volunteer to take up this position, if the proposal is accepted. My one year programme at NTU has been tough personally and academically, but I have gotten the opportunity to work at NTU as a student ambassador and currently as a Library Information Assistant. I see now a lot of resources and pathways that could have helped me achieve a better academic experience and I believe I can offer these insights to incoming international students.
