Thank you for your Big Idea. This idea was taken to Executive Student Forum where the Executive Team worked alongside NTU to investigate the possibilities. It was decided that unfortunately it would not be economically efficient for NTU to provide childcare services on site, and would be too burdensome to deal with the necessary additional regulation for childcare providers, including OFSTED oversight. Instead, NTU Student Services have made more options available to support student parents and have formed relationships with nearby childcare providers to offer further information and support to students who need it.
Either a supervised soft play space that enable students to drop their children and use university facilities
and/or
an onsite subsdised creche for student parents.
We feel that this facility would enable parent students to have access to the university in a more free and inclusive way. This would aid studies and encouraging enrolment and reduce drop out rate of student parents. It may also provide a social space for parent students to meet others and form a supportive social network.
Hi Emily! Student Council voted to adopt this Big Idea as policy! I have already brought this up in the university’s executive student forum and we have set up a working group to look into provision of childcare. If you would like any more information on this you can contact me, your VP Community and Welfare, at vpcommunity@su.ntu.ac.uk.
