Headshot of NTSU's President, Conor NaughtonWe are pleased that after engaging in discussions with the University restored the special measures they had for Notification of Extenuating Circumstances for extensions from last year. This means students do not need to provide independent documentary evidence when seeking an NEC; Just explain how you are affected.

During the 2019/20 academic year when COVID struck NTU allowed any student to apply for an NEC (Notification of Extenuating Circumstances) allowing them to get extensions on any work and deadlines they had which were disputed by COVID-19. I propose the University bring this policy back allowing any student at NTU to apply for an NEC and be given one for example on the grounds of:

  • Struggling with mental health
  • Not having a suitable home working space
  • Disruption caused by a change in where they are required to work

By allowing any student who submits an NEC a fair and easier way of being given one this will mean students can be given more time and breathing space to complete any deadlines they have for the rest of the academic year.
